ISO provides guidance for multiple systems

GENEVA, Switzerland—The   International Standards Organization (ISO) has an updated edition of the ISO 19011 auditing standard which will save money, time and resources by providing a uniform approach to multiple management system audits. The standard, ISO 19011:2011, provides guidance on the conduct of internal or external management system audits, as well as on the management of audit programs. Intended users of this International Standard include auditors, audit team leaders, audit program managers, organizations implementing management systems, and organizations needing to conduct audits of management systems for contractual or regulatory reasons.

GSA requires carpet standard

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which serves as the purchasing arm of the U.S. government and oversees more than $60 billion in purchased goods and services annually, now requires Gold Level certification to NSF/ANSI 140 Sustainability Assessment for Carpet for all broadloom (wall-to-wall) carpet and carpet tile purchased through the GSA.

Current GSA carpet suppliers have until January 1, 2012 to certify their products to NSF/ANSI 140 Gold Level in order for their carpets to be considered for purchase through the GSA .

ASTM addresses paving materials

WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Penna.—ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials is currently at work on a proposed moisture conditioning method for compacted asphalt samples that is both time-efficient and allows for the simulation of field conditions.

ASTM WK32764, Practice for Moisture Conditioning Compacted Asphalt Mixture Samples by Using Hydrostatic Pore Pressure, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D04.22 on Effect of Water and Other Elements on Bituminous Coated Aggregates.

CMS issues proposed rule

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed rule that is designed to improve the quality and safety of treatment provided to more than 25,000 Medicare beneficiaries who receive care at Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) each year.

The notice of proposed rulemaking would establish conditions of participation (CoPs) for CMHCs for the first time.  The proposed rule includes health and safety standards for CMHCs that participate in the Medicare program, and are an important step in CMS’ commitment to assuring the delivery of safe, quality care to clients of CMHCs.   In particular, the proposed new conditions focus on a client-centered, outcome-oriented approach.

IEEE announces electrical code

PISCATAWAY, N.J.—IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) announced the 2012 edition of the National Electrical Safety Code® (NESC®) is available for pre-order online prior to publication in August 2011.

Published exclusively by IEEE, the NESC sets the ground rules for practical safeguarding of persons during the installation, operation, or maintenance of electric supply and communication lines and associated equipment. The NESC contains the basic provisions that are considered necessary for the safety of employees and the public under the specified conditions.
