NASA initiates robotics competition
WASHINGTON, D.C.—NASA is continuing its strong support for the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, which inspires student interest in science, technology, and mathematics through a challenge to design and build a robot. The agency is awarding grants totaling $1,386,500 for student teams in 37 states to participate in FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

EPA commends UCF
ATLANTA, Ga.—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Fla. as the winner of EPA’s 2011 Energy Star National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings. UCF’s winning building was a parking garage on the university’s main campus where energy use was decreased by 63.2%.

NIOSH recognizes exceptional service
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recognizes one current or former NIOSH employee each year for exceptional service to the field of occupational safety and health. This award honors the contributions made by public health workers who fight long odds to achieve safer and healthier workplaces.
James P. Keogh, MD was a tireless advocate for worker safety and health who died in June 1999 at the age of 49. His earliest work in academic medicine identified dimethylaminopropionitrile as the causal agent in an outbreak of bladder neuropathy in the 1970s.

GSA garners award for encouraging telework

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has been awarded honorable mention at the 2011 Tele-Vision Awards from the Telework Exchange.
Currently, about 50% of GSA’s workforce teleworks at least one day a week. Through telework programs, government employees are better equipped to use innovative technology to stay connected with their colleagues and customers. Teleworking is also aiding government in disaster response efforts and reducing the impact on our environment by reducing employees’ commutes to the office. |

DOE wins awards
WASHINGTON, D.C. –The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) researchers have won 36 of the 100 awards given out this year by R&D Magazine for the most outstanding technology developments with promising commercial potential. The coveted awards are presented annually in recognition of exceptional new products, processes, materials or software developed throughout the world and introduced into the market the previous year.
