Governors Association appoints director

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Governors Association (NGA) has named Richard Laine as Director of the Education Division for the NGA Center for Best Practices (NGA Center).

“I am very pleased to announce that Richard will be joining NGA to further the education policy work of the nation’s governors,” said NGA Executive Director Dan Crippen. “Richard’s experience and broad knowledge of education issues will be invaluable to the association.”

The NGA Center develops innovative solutions to today’s most pressing public policy challenges and is the only research and development firm that directly serves the nation’s governors. The Education Division provides information on best practices in early childhood, K-12 and higher education.

Laura Bush serves on National Trust

NASCIO appoints executive committee

DENVER, Colo.—Top state information technology leaders have been selected to serve as the incoming Executive Committee for the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).
NASCIO’s newest leaders are:

  • President – Dugan Petty, Chief Information Officer, Oregon
  • Vice President – Brenda Decker, Chief Information Officer, Nebraska
  • Secretary-Treasurer – Lisa Feldner, Chief Information Officer, North Dakota

Council of State Governments appoints chair

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Wyoming Rep. Rosie Berger has assumed chairmanship of The Council of State Governments West. She previously served as chair-elect and vice chair of the organization; she also is a graduate of its Western Legislative Academy.

Partnership picks new board members

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Partnership for Public Service announced that four new members have been elected to serve on its Board of Directors. The board has elected Adm. Thad Allen (Ret.), former Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard; the Honorable Tom Davis, director of federal government affairs at Deloitte and a seven-term Congressman from Virginia; Lloyd Howell, executive vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton; and Peter R. Orszag, vice chairman of global banking at Citigroup, Inc. and former director of the Office of Management and Budget, to serve initial three-year terms.

CEFPI and NSSEA work together

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. and SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) and the National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA) have formed a strategic partnership to jointly develop and promote educational sessions at the 2011 School Equipment Show.

The School Equipment Show, scheduled for November 30-December 2 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, is the annual gathering for the facilities marketplace and features hundreds of companies with innovative products for the classroom of the future on display during the 2 ½ day event.

HIS and ISSA join forces

BOISE, Idaho—The Healthy Facilities Institute (HFI) and ISSA have announced an alliance to provide cleaning organizations with ongoing education about the Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) and other key initiatives designed to foster healthier indoor environments.

The partnership will include cooperative efforts to reach cleaning service providers (CSPs) and other influencers through articles and communications highlighting the value of CIMS and CIMS-GB, and the upcoming Clean Standard for K-12 Schools.

Pew invests in Philly culture

PHILADELPHIA—The Pew Charitable Trusts announced grants totaling $1,032,000 to five Philadelphia-area arts and culture organizations: Asian Arts Initiative, Bucks County Historical Society, Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, Philadelphia Folklore Project and the Philadelphia Zoo. 

The grants are provided as unrestricted general operating funds through Pew’s Philadelphia Cultural Leadership Program (PCLP), which annually rewards organizations in the five-county region that demonstrate excellence in operations, fiscal management and programming.

Healthy Schools Program gets $23 million grant

PRINCETON, N.J.—The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, announced that it has received a $23.2 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to expand and extend its Healthy Schools Program through 2014.

Since 2006, RWJF has awarded the Alliance more than $51 million to transform schools into healthier places, making the Healthy Schools Program the largest single investment of its $500 million commitment to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. The Healthy Schools Program helps schools develop and implement policies and practices that promote healthy eating and increase physical activity before, during and after school for students and staff.
