Civilian BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) passes
Transportation & Infrastructure Committee

The Civilian Property Realignment Act (H.R. 1734) was approved by the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on October 13th by a vote of 30 to 22.  Proposed by Representative Jeff Denham, the legislation is designed to improve the management of federal property and shrink the federal government’s footprint.  The bill would establish a 9 member commission which would review federal properties and make recommendations for consolidations, co-locations, redevelopment, or sale in order to reduce government operating costs.  The proposed Board would review approximately 14,000 buildings designated as excess, and 76,000 properties identified as underused, then facilitate their expedient disposal.  A national map including 14,000 buildings and structures designated as excess is posted at http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/fiscal/excess-property-map.  The Coalition will continue to follow the status of the Civilian Property Realignment Act and keep members updated through the Federal Buildings Committee.
